The Sorrows of Satan. Marie Corelli
Marie Corelli's perspectives on religion and society are given their most thorough and unambiguous treatment in her 1895 magnum opus, The Sorrows of Satan. Its plot commences with the Devil's arrival in turn-of-the-century London. Taking the appearance of the handsome and charismatic Prince Lucio Rimânez, he anticipates an easy undertaking. This confidence stems from the prevailing atmosphere: a world priori tizing science and material goods over faith in God makes it unlikely anyone will identify Lucio as the Devil concealed. His chosen target is Geoffrey Tempest, an author rescued from starvation by a sudden fortune, whom Lucio tempts with promises of authority and public acclaim.
